Live Your Legend. Now.

You have probably heard by now that Scott Dinsmore was killed on September 12, 2015 while hiking up Mount Kilimanjaro .  If you haven’t, you aren’t reading the right blogs.  All the guys that I know that are crushing it building lifestyle businesses knew and respected the guy.  His TED talk “How to Find and Do the Work you Love” has generated nearly three million views.

I never got a chance to meet him.  Although I had seen the TED talk and was aware of his blog.   The news still shook me up.  I think it reminds me of my own mortality, especially because he was so young.  But it’s also a real wake-up call.  Perhaps if he hadn’t been living his legend he would have made it to a ripe old age.  He wouldn’t have been out climbing dangerous mountains where he might get in the path of falling boulders.

But, at the end of the day, we all end up the same way.  When its all over, what’s left but our experiences and memories we leave behind.   If you live exist the safe, complacent life, what do you have when its over?  You’re not really living.  You probably shouldn’t even be reading this blog.  Because this blog is as much about lifestyle as it is about marketing.  Its about taking the work you love and using the internet to create a tribe that supports you for the value you create for them.

I encourage you to take a look at Scott’s blog Live Your Legend and the heartfelt tributes from the bloggers / lifestyle designers that have been inspired by him.  A Google search will lead you to dozens of them, but here a few from people that I follow (and that you should probably follow too):

When An Internet Friend Dies on Chase Reeves’ blog IceToTheBrim.com

Gone Too Soon: My Friend Scott on Jonathan Fields Blog

You’re lucky.  You still have time.  The energy that Scott had and the amazing success that he created should inspire you to step up your game and take it to the next level.  Exercise your right to be around inspiring people.  Start working on the things you love and start really living your life.

Do it for Scott.  I’m sure he would appreciate it.

5 Tricks to Energize Your Blog Posts

5 TIPS TO ENERGISE YOURYou sit down in front of your computer, open up WordPress, click the new post button and sit there with the cursor blinking.  You need to get a post up today.  Now what?  Ok, you cobble together a quick title and write out a few paragraphs.  You’re not happy with it, but you haven’t published a blog post in two weeks.  You’ve got to get something done today.   So you do a quick read over fix a few small errors.  You read it again, and you know its really boring.  “Yes,” you think, “but i have to get it out today!  I’m running out of time!!”

Reluctantly, you press publish, and hurl your mass of mediocrity out into the abyss of cyberspace.

Now, you need to promote what you wrote.  People aren’t going to just stumble on it like they did a few years ago.  After thorough reflection on the stirring prose you have just created you decide to take a nap for a while.

If you want to write good posts that people will read, you’re not going to get it done this way.  You can’t bang out a great blog post at the last minute.  You won’t get the quality that you need to keep people engaged.  And because you know your post is mediocre when you finish writing it, you are not going to put the required effort into promoting it.

You need a plan to help you write better and to create engaging content that people will read.  So, here are some pointers that will dramatically improve your content.

Brainstorm before you blog

Don’t just sit down at your computer at start trying to write a blog the day its due.  (You do have a regular publishing schedule, right?) Take a day, well in advance of your deadline to brainstorm 100 or more blog titles.  Try creating a mind map of your subject area to help generate more ideas.

When thinking about titles, you will likely start with topics.  Topics are very broad and too general to make a good blog post.  For an actual post, you should go an inch wide and a mile deep.  “Writing Good Blog Posts” is a topic.   A narrower topic is “Creating Great InfoGraphics for Your Blog”.   How about “How to Create InfoGraphics using Cartoons”  as a blog post.   Consider making one pass creating broad titles – then make a second pass trying to create more specific titles that could fit in that topic area.

By working out your subjects in advance, you will also have more time to collect up and organize the information.   You won’t write about “Five Experts Share Their Tips for a Better Blog” if you have to bang the post out in two hour.  You will be lucky if you can get a hold of one expert in that much time, much less five.   Quite simply, if you have several posts in the works, you will have time to do do the necessary research, create images or info-graphics, and take any other required action to do them well.

Tell a Story

Now you’ve got some great ideas to write about.  How can you keep your readers engaged and reading?  One of the best ways is to draw them into a story. Don’t just offer the solution, tell them about someone who faced the problem and how they solved it.   Or, write from their point of view.  When your done, you have to feel like you have engaging content that other will want to read, or you won’t be able to get up from your nap to promote it.

Now, hopefully you’re writing better stories than I do.  But don’t worry, they more you write the better they will get.  what else can you do to keep your reader engaged?

Break up your posts with headings

People don’t read on the Internet, they scan.  The average reader – your reader –  is very distracted, so make it easy for them to scan your post for a quick overview or to find some portion of your post that strikes their curiosity.  If they all can see is a large block of text without any sort of a road map or outline, they will probably just to back to their search results and click on something else.

Subheadings make your posts more readable.

Your readers will most likely scan your post quickly before deciding to dig in deeper.  You need to guide them through the content with well chosen headings that breakup and outline the content.

Ignite your reader’s curiosity with clever titles

You know those titles that you  just have to click on?  “5 Tricks to Lose Weight Fast (Number Three Will Shock You)”  They create a feeling of intense curiosity that almost forces you to click on the heading.    They are called clickbait and they are great headlines to get people to start reading your content. Use them, but beware: make sure the headline is accurate.  You risk upsetting and alienating your reader when they get to number three and aren’t shocked. If you disappoint your readers, you’re going to lose them.

Powerful adjectives improve titles and text

Use power adjectives, they capture reader’s attention.  Employ a thesaurus liberally to find more energetic synonyms for your adjectives, especially when writing titles.  Here are some good examples:

  • Suddenly
  • Amazing
  • Startling
  • Magic
  • Easy
  • Immediately
  • Powerful
  • Exclusive
  • Extraordinary
  • Ultimate
  • Secret
  • Inspiring
  • Brilliant
  • Excellent
  • Mind-blowing
  • Valuable
  • Shocking

Now that you’ve drawn your readers in with a story and lead them through the story with well placed titles, what else can you do?   Try adding graphics to further break up the text and make it more visually appealing.

Enliven your posts with Graphics

Well established bloggers all use a featured image in their posts.   Additional graphics will make your posts interest your readers even more.   For example, a bar graph quickly conveys much more information than a table.

Use a title graphic / featured image

Title graphics can be very simple.   A remotely related picture with some text over it,  perhaps using several different fonts to add emphasis to the text.  Don’t think too much about the image.  Its really not that important.  Years ago I wrote for a magazine that inserted “color zowies” on their pages.  I don’t think that is a professional term, but it was what they called them.  They were just rectangular blobs of color that they threw on the page and wrapped the text around.  There primary effect was to make the magazine longer, but it also made it more attractive and easier to read.  (Hmmm, perhaps I should try incorporating this into my blog posts)

For free photo’graphs and images try the following websites:

  • Public Domain Archive
  • Pixabay
  • Gratisography.com
  • Freeimages

Incorporate Data Visualization

Graphs and Info-graphics are a key tool for helping your readers absorb the information in your post.  Currently, I use Inkscape and OpenOffice Calc to create graphs and info-graphics.  This is an area that I’m exploring though.

Now that you’re planning your posts in advance, telling stories, outlining your stories with cleaver headlines and adding graphics, your posts will be much more worthy of promoting.  Hopefully you won’t feel the need to nap after your posts are done any more.

How are you doing?

What do you think of this post?  Did you find any ideas that will help improve your blogging?  What are your biggest challenges you face in trying to create your blog content?

Great Free Tools to Build Your Business

Tools to build businessThere are three FREE tools that I regularly use in my business. I think you will find them to be very useful as well.  Check them out and let me know what you think.

OpenOffice (or LibreOffice)

OpenOffice includes word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing and database tools. The first three of these basically replace the standard Microsoft office suite. Its not as full features, but it gets the job done.

OpenOffice was an open source fork of the proprietary StarOffice created by Sun Microsystems. When Sun was bought by Oracle, there were some concerns about the continued availability of the product and enthusiasts created a fork called LibreOffice. Oracle discontinued StarOffice and donated the code to the Apache organization so that OpenOffice is now Apache Open Office. There is an ongoing commitment to keep it available. LibreOffice is also being actively developed as an open source application.

Gimp

Gimp is a graphics manipulation program similar to Photoshop.  It is good for adjusting the color of your images and scaling, cropping and compositing  them.  You can also use it to add text and graphical elements to your images.  Gimp also has an easy to use scripting language and a lot of built in scripts to create enhanced text images.  With a bit of practice, you can use the scripting features to create workflows anYou can use it to create a workflow for creating featured images for your WordPress posts.

Download Gimp here.

Inkscape

Inkscape is a graphic design tool similar to Adobe Illustrator.  It can be used to create charts, graphs, logos, diagrams, cartoons, illustrations and more.  It creates vector designs which mean that the images are created by paths instead of pixels.  The paths are scalable so that a small image won’t loose resolution when it is scaled up.  Inkscape also has tools that are specialized for drawing in contract to Gimp, which is designed for image editing.

Coloring Your Blogs

When I’m searching the web or following other peoples blogs, I’m always looking for clever tricks to make my blog more interesting. One that I saw this week was a blog that had portions highlighted.

Its easy to highlight your blog. Simply switch to text mode and add some div tags that set the background color.  This group of paragraphs for example is wrapped in:

<div style=”background-color: #ffffc0; padding: 20px;”>
. . . [paragraph text here ] . . .
<div>

The color tags set the background color and the padding pushes the text in a bit with the colored section.

While you can add this kind of formatting for any section of a blog, the color will be fixed for that particular post and can’t be changed easily when you update your site.  So consider adding a few highlighting styles that you can either edit into your theme’s CSS file, or, depending on your theme, there may be a place where you can globally add items within the head.

Then, add some style code like the following (the style tags won’t be necessary if you edit it into your theme’s CSS file):

<style>
imhq-highlight-one { background-color: #ffffc0; padding: 20px;}
</style>

Later you can color sections of your post by adding div tags choosing one of the highlights you have added into your CSS by wrapping your text with the following tags.

<div class=”imhq-highlight-one”> . . . [paragraph text here ] . . .    <div>

Adding colored boxes around certain portions of your text will make your blog easier to read and more attractive.   If you later change your theme or theme colors, you can also globally change the highlighting colors by changing these few bits of CSS.

When using this technique, it’s most valuable to highlight something that needs to be called out.  For example, if you wanted to put a series of definitions that didn’t belong in the main text, using a highlighted box would separate them from the text.

5 Creative Internet Business Ideas

5-creative-ideas

People often ask me, “What kind of an internet business should I start?”. The answer really depends on what you have enough passion to write about consistently and is in an area that people will likely spend money for. To spark your imagination, here are several sample businesses that people I know are running.

Examples

Improve your parenting

At alisonsmithcoaching.com, Alison teaches people to become better parents.  Allison is doing a fantastic job of creating her own personal persona of being an expert in her field, getting herself on television, begin invitated to speak at major events, and appearing on podcasts.  She’s also monetizing her site with gentle parenting guides.  Check out this article reminding mothers to take care of themselves.   It’s a great job, helping families improve their lives.

Behaviors to Improve your Business

Dr. John Austin is an internationally recognized expert in providing behavior-based solutions to organizational challenges. On his blog at reachingresults.com he and other members of his team present helpful articles to improve business behavior.  I really liked the article by his colleague, Nicole, on controlling your inner micro manager.  Frankly that’s an issue that a lot of us face in starting a business and it can interfere a lot with your growth.  You have to be able to rely on other people to get things done.  He monetizes his site with ebooks and also uses it to promote conferences.

Run your cleaning business better

Dimitar Karamarinov has a great idea with his blog, fantasticcleaners.com, where he teaches people how to run a cleaning business.  I liked, for example, his tips on how to get bloodstains out of a mattress.  I couldn’t see how he is bringing in money from his site but he has a reasonable amount of visitors.   After a few good tips, vistors would be happy to buy an ebook from him.

Grow your business

Safwan’s blog, www.startupily.com, features and promotes startups and helps them with their social media marketing.  If you are working on starting an internet business, his article on social media is a must read.  He is currently monetizing his site with affiliate offers, but I can see him creating a value ladder of social media guides in the future.

Lose Weight

Losing weight is another popular topic on the web.  but Claude at mostpowerfuldevice.com has a spin on it: “Its all in your mind”  He also personalizes it by taking people on the journey with him.  Take a look at this post where, after losing 60 pounds, he invites his readers to come on a journey with him.  If you review his website, you can see that he is starting to monetize his site with a book.

Conclusion

The choices that you have to start your internet business are endless.  Think about the examples above and start taking action. Pick a topic area where people will spend money.  Write with your own voice.  If you do this, you will create a tribe of people that will follow you.  That tribe is the key to making money online.

Tell me your thoughts.  What internet business have you started or are you going to start?
